China’ Media Report On Wang Lijun and Bo Xilai

Vice-mayor of Chongqing Wang Lijun’s defecting to the U.S.

consulate lead to discussions’ explosion on China’s Internet.

The Chinese mainstream media, which at ordinary times are

strictly controlled by the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) Propaganda Department also showed an active attitude.

Various gray tricks have been carried out

in relation to the forbidden topic.

There are remarks saying that a top-level CCP internal

fighting is involved behind these normally forbidden reports.

What’s more, the power struggle has come

to the front rather than being kept underground.

Ordinarily, Chinese media is forbidden to report scandals

of high-level CCP officials.

However, the recent Wang Lijun event seemed to have

broken this taboo.

The mainstream Chinese newspaper crossed

the “red line” one after another.

The event was reported in either direct or obscure ways,

which led to imaginations go wild.

On January 10th, all major newspapers in Beijing wrote about

CCP’s investigation on Wang Lijun in their headline news.

These include the Beijing News, the Beijing Times,

and the Beijing Evening News.

Besides citing Xinhua, Beijing News published an abstract

on its front page and a detailed report in its “Important News” section.

Wang Lijun’s photo and resume are also posted aside,

suggesting that the event has become a national issue.

Other media placed Bo Xilai’s photo and Wang Lijun’s news

together, as to allude to their complicated relationship.

The Yunnan Life Daily had the photo of Bo Xilai’s visiting

Kunming at the top front page, and Wang Lijun’s news at the bottom.

And the daring Southern Metropolis Daily showed a large-size

photo of Bo Xilai at the top of its website, and Wang Lijun’s news updates right below.

The official newspaper of Chongqing party committee,

Chongqing Daily also reported the event on its second page.

Interestingly, there’s no article on Bo Xilai’s trip to Yunnan.

Former China Civil Front magazine reporter and freelance

writer Liu Yiming made comments on the issue.

Liu said that as a princeling Bo Xilai has a strong background,

which makes it difficult for Hu-Wen to bring him down.

Liu Yiming:”If Hu Jintao wants to overthrow Bo Xilai,

he probably has to do it in some unusual way.

I guess Hu-Wen need the support of the media,

and especially of the public to make things easier.”

Chinese writer Tie Liu told NTD that currently there is little

news on Bo Xilai in Chongqing’s newspapers.

Tie Liu further revealed, in early January a group of retired

CCP leading members had objected to Bo Xilai’s Politburo membership in the incoming 18th congress.

Tie Liu: ”Not only Qiao Shi, but Li Ruihuan, Wei Jianxing

and a group of seniors opposed Bo’s getting in the Politburo.

A lot more trouble will emerge if he really gets the position.

He will do this today and that tomorrow, but then nobody

can really risk to control his behavior.”

The China times wrote, the widely reported Wang Lijun case

makes the rarely exposed CCP political struggle come to light.

Furthermore, this suggests acquiesce from Beijing authority.

Scholar of the CCP’s history, political commentator

Lin Baohua discusses the issue.

Lin said, Bo Xilai is a malicious man with unlimited ambition;

nobody is fond of him, from top to bottom.

Lin Baohua:”Therefore everyone has concerns

when dealing with Bo Xilai.

Thus they agree to bring him down,

together with all the others.

Wang Lijun happened to expose Bo at this time,

and thus became the trigger.”

On the party media People’s Daily Online and its affiliated

forum and weibo, the discussions on Wang Lijun event was officially open.

Among them indirect critics on Bo Xilai can be found.

A doggerel has become popular amongst Chinese netizens:

”Dog bites dog, new cocktail brewing.

Make the red songs shake the mountain today,

be escorted to the execution ground tomorrow.

How dreadful does the 18th congress look?

Just watch how the bosses fight in groups.

The losers end up with vacation tickets,

the winner takes the position of the gang’s head.”
