Taiwan held an air-defense exercise on Thursday with fighter jets and anti-aircraft missiles to showcase its military strength.

The drill came two days after the island staged one of the biggest missile tests in almost a decade.

The military showcased eight Taiwan-made jetfighters taking off and landing in a series of exercises.

The exercise kicked off just days after China held its first test-flight of the J-20 fighter jet prototype.

But a Taiwanese defense ministry spokesperson denied there was any connection between the two events.

但台灣國防部發言人否認兩件事有任何關聯。

[Yu Sy-Tue, Spokesperson, Taiwanese Defense Ministry]:

"In reality, the air-defense military drill is an annual one. We were planning to conduct the drill last October, but because of typhoon Meiji and other weather reasons, we had to postpone it. It is a simple annual drill and unlike what others say, it has nothing to do with the maiden test-flight of the J-20 fighter jet.”

台灣國防部發言人虞思祖說：「實際上，防空軍事演習是年度例行之事。去年我們正計劃進行演習，但因為梅姬颱風及其它氣象因素，我們必須延期。這是一個簡單的年度演習，不像其他人所說，它與殲20戰鬥機首次試飛，沒有任何關係。」

He also claimed that Taiwan has long known about China's J-20 fighter jet development and is not concerned about it.

他也聲稱，台灣早已知有關中國殲20戰鬥機的發展，並不在意它。

Spokesperson Yu Sy-Tue, said:"The Taiwanese military has plenty of knowledge on the J-20 fighter jet, even from its research and development stage. Its actual capability is not as strong as what outsiders predict nor is it comparable to the U.S. F-22 fighter jet.”

國防部發言人虞思祖說：:“台灣軍方知道許多有關於殲20戰鬥機，甚至從研發階段開始。它的實際能力並不如外界所預測的強，也無法與美國的F-22戰鬥機相比。

China is believed to have over 1,500 missiles pointing at Taiwan, and Taiwan recently revealed that it is developing missiles that can hit mainland cities.

據信，中國有超過 1,500枚飛彈對準台灣，台灣最近透露正在發展能擊中大陸城市的飛彈。
