【英文說文解字】

各位讀者好：

這是一則戰爭新聞，在戰爭中，“攻擊”就是很重要的「結構字」，有很多的英文字彙，都具有“攻擊”的意義，像是attack, assault, assail, raid, strike等。因此“空襲”就會常寫成air attack, air strike, air raid。“空襲警報”的“警報”，也有warning, alert, alarm三種表達方式，所以英文記者寫到“空襲警報”就可能是：air raid warning, air strike alarm, air attack alert。

一般“記者”會有reporter, journalist二種表達方式，“記者會”則會有news conference或是press conference二種表達方式。

-miss與 –mit都是表示 to send

再來談missile為什麼是“飛彈”呢？這就牽扯到-miss這個字根，-miss與 –mit都是表示 to send的意思。 所以emit=e-(out)+-mit(to send)，to send out所以是“發出”的意思，emission則是其“名詞”形。transmit=trans-(across)+-mit(to send)，to send across所以是“傳輸”的意思，transmission則是名詞形。permit=per-(through)+-mit(to send)，to send through，得到“允許”，才能夠把東西送過去！名詞形則是pemission。那麼 missile為什麼是“飛彈”就很容易理解了，“飛彈”就是送出去的子彈嘛！

-cept是to take的意思

那麼為什麼“intercept”是「攔截」的意思呢？inter-是between之意，-cept是to take的意思，intercept就是to take something between～從二者之間拿到某個東西，所以就是「攔截」，「攔截」就是在我方與對方之間，將某件東西以某種方式阻擋了下來。

以-cept造出字的還不少，像是except, concept, reception…等。except=e-(out)+-cept(to take)，to take out把某件東西拿走，所以是“除外”的意思。

concept=con-(together)+-cept(to take)，to take together～把某種特性的東西放在一起，形成“概念”。reception=re-(back)+-cept(to take)，to take back，把朋友帶回家“接待”一番，deception=de-(apart)+-cept(to take)。

Journalists were taken to view the damage, and then sat through a news conference during which government officials gave their reassurance that the port is still operational.

記者們被帶去看損害，然後坐著參加記者會，政府官員保證：港口仍然可以營運。

According to NATO, its forces sank eight of Libya's warships and intercepted a fuel tanker believed to be heading for the military.

根據北約的說法，北約的軍隊擊沈八艘利比亞戰艦，並且攔截一艘據信是駛向軍方的油輪。
