55 Websites Closed by CCP

The CCP (Chinese Communist Party) recently

closed 55 “illegal public relation websites,”

including 20 rights protection websites. Internet

rights activists said that those suppressed might be

“websites which expose the sordid side of society.”.

Netizens criticized the CCP for using fancy words,

when it is actually killing freedom of speech.

CCP』s four ministries (Internet Information Office,

Industry and Information Technology, Public Security,

State Administration for Industry and Commerce)

recently joined efforts to take strong measures.

They suppressed so-called illegal PR networks

and closed down 55 related websites.

Zgmsgc.net』s (website about Chinese people』s lives)

sponsor, Liu Feiyao, recently told Voice of America

(VOA): “These websites should be established

by folk rights activists and civil journalists, and focus

on rights protection, report issues CCP media won』t,

and other information which reveals the sordid

and negative side. These rights protection websites

aren』t official. CCP took this chance to close them.”

Over 20 websites about rights protection

were among the 55 closed, including

People Discover, Peoples』 Voice, Redian 315,

315 Consumer Complaint, 315 Network,

and 315 Tianya Complaints and Denunciation.

Reporters tried to enter those closed websites,

among which Redian 315』s home page said

“Focus on hot issues, listen to people』s voice.”

Its last update was in December 2010.

Peoples』 Voice homepage shows

that its last update was in August 2010.

Liu Feiyao said his site, zgmsgc.net, was blocked

less than a month after its establishment because

it was “a hostile website.” As its server is overseas,

the website could not be completely blocked,

but it is still hard for Chinese netizens to see.

A netizen 『Weiqi Leak』 commented that: “Anything

done by authorities can change its nature.

In the name of anti-pornography,

cracking down on evil forces or closing illegal websites,

authorities are actually suppressing freedom of speech,

media, and the voice of democratic rights activists.”

VOA cited information from related ministries that

these 55 websites “have so-called 『rights protection

networks,』 『message-deleting companies』 claiming

to help delete negative messages,

『navy networks』 and 『voting companies』

which recruit and advocate 『online navy,』 a 『vote agent,』

and an 『Internet helper』 which do 『online hype.』”

This May, Agency France Press (AFP) reported

that 500 million Chinese people use the Internet,

which is becoming an important forum and channel

for the world』s most populous country.

CCP has noticed this trend and

authorities pay close attention to public opinion,

though they set strict rules about what is allowed online.

US senator Charles Schumer recently visited China.

During the 4th Annual Internet Week Conference

in New York on June 6, Schumer said,

“Chinese leaders saw things happening in Tunisia

and Egypt, so they are afraid of the Internet.

They claim to have “closed” the Internet,

but I haven』t figured out how, since people

who circumvent the block could still access it.

The nature of the Internet is freedom.

People will always circumvent the block.”
