Mao』s Critics Silenced
For a peaceful celebration of its 90th anniversary,
the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) ordered
the leftist website “Wuyou County” to stop
its prosecution of scholars Xin Ziling and Mao Yushi.
The latter was ordered to stop criticizing Mao Zedong.
Author Tie Liu said that monks sing “red” songs
reminded him of the Cultural Revolution.
He plans to set up a website to advocate
criticizing Mao Zedong.
After leftist website Wuyou County initiated
its prosecution of Xinzi Ling and Mao Yushi,
a group of persecuted rightists started their own
campaign to "prosecute Mao Zedong”.
Prior to July 1st, the CCP issued warnings
to both leftists and rightists and order them to
temporarily stop their respective movements.
Mao Yushi』s scheduled interview with Voice of
America (VOA) was also cancelled by the police.
As per VOA, Mao Yushi was scheduled to be
on a live talk show on June 29 at 9:00 p.m.
The topic is "How to evaluate Mao Zedong".
However, before leaving for the show,
Mao Yushi was suddenly visited by the police.
As he had to stay at home, the show was canceled.
Mao Yushi (economist): They said no bickering.
However, they are not reasonable.
They demanded me not to talk about Mao Zedong,
because Wuyou County stopped their discussions.
I can agree with this. However, it is nonsense
to prohibit me from participating in the show.
Tie Liu revealed that senior CCP officials told him
that the battle between the Maoists and the critics
is detrimental to both the state and the society.
Both Wuyou』s prosecution or rightists』 prosecution
were rejected by the CCP authorities.
It remained just a war of words.
Tie Liu: The authorities would find the issue
more difficult to handle once the battle is on.
If they accepted Wuyou County』s indictment,
there would be debates at the court.
This would be detrimental to Mao Zedong』s image
and the CCP』s anniversary celebration.
So the authorities chose to keep things quiet.
Mao Yushi said, the international communist
movements gave birth to the CCP.
However, this was later proven to be wrong.
Communism is a utopian idea. In fact,
the current CCP members, including the leaders,
don』t believe in communism.
Regarding the CCP』s history, Mao Yushi believes
that the CCP』s anti-rightist movement,
the great famine and the Cultural Revolution are
big mistakes, resulting in tens of millions of deaths.
The reforms were good, but now the issues of
the privileged and corruption are getting worse.
The CCP』s legality to rule depends on the people.
Mao Yushi: The CCP』s legitimacy rests on
the success of its reforms and opening up.
If the CCP followed its original path,
it would have fallen a long time ago.
If it carries out political reforms and transform itself
into a democratic government, it will have legitimacy.
Otherwise, it will be in danger.
The CCP』s propaganda department recently
set off a campaign to sing communist “red” songs.
Even monks, nuns and Christians are forced
to sing, to show their loyalty towards the CCP.
This reminds people of Mao』s era. Tie Liu is worried.
He said he would set up a website to promote
the civil movement to criticize Mao Zedong.
