Civilian Survival Or Authority Interests?

Villagers in Haining city, Zhejiang province in China

have held three days of protest against Jinko Solar Co.

discharging heavy cancer-causing pollution.

Villagers and journalists were beaten by company security.

The protesters beat local officials and overturned

four police cars. The police also fired tear gas.

Online sources state that over 10 people are injured or dead.

A human rights activist said that Chinese Communist Party』

(CCP) system was causing the struggle in people』s lives.

The Jinko Solar company is a subsidiary of a New York

Stock Exchange-listed Chinese solar company,

fully financed by Hong Kong Paker Technology Co., Ltd.

They produce solar wafers, cells and other products,

exporting to more than twenty countries within Europe, Asia,

and the United States.

The plant is located in Haining city, Zhejiang province

and Shangrao city, Jiangxi province.

There are over 10,000 employees

and the plant covers more than 165 acres.

The Solar plant is located in Hongxiao village

of Yuanhua town, Haining city.

Villagers blame the company for discharging polluted water

and harmful gases into the environment,

causing the massive deaths of fish floating in the river.

Local villagers found that there were over 10 people

who developed cancer as a result of the pollution.

One netizen, Mr. Sun, was even arrested by the police

“for spreading rumours online.”

Several had died from the cancer-causing pollution

in Hongxiao village on September 15,

causing the villagers to panic and gather

at the Solar plant to seek explanation.

Some villagers were chased and beaten

by the Solar company』s security men.

Protester numbers reached over a few thousand

by that evening.

Mr Chen (Villager): “There was a senior lady selling

vegetables, she kneeled down and asked officials,

『Please move the factory, vegetables are difficult to sell now.』

The mayor approached her and said,

『You are very old and yet you also come to make trouble.』

Villagers were angry to hear this,

so they started beating the mayor.”

CCP』s mouthpiece, Xinhua News Agency, quoted Haining

officials』,that 500 villagers gathered at the Solar plant

at 7.30pm on September 15, some stormed the factory

compound, flipped over 8 vehicles and damaged offices.

The next day, there were a large number of villagers gathered

again at the Solar company, blocking the road.

Two journalists, Zhang Jun and Zhao Ting, of Zhejiang TV

Qianjiang Channel came to Solar company for interviews,

but were beaten by over 10 security men,

and the camera equipment was smashed.

Qianjiang Channel presenter: “Being a person with a normal

degree of emotion, I want to say this to the Solar company,

『Bastards, who do you think you are? Are you some kind

of wild beings who haven』t evolved completely?

I curse you not only for my colleagues which you』ve beaten,

and for the hampered interview,

but because justice was hurt and the truth was harmed.”

Central News Agency quoted a mainland netizen』s posts

that there were almost 10,000 villagers gathered

in the evening on September 16. There were over 20,000

people who gathered online reports.

Authorities sent over 1,000 police, with batons and tear gas

to dismiss protesters. Police and protesters were fighting

each other, four police cars were turned over, and online

reports claimed that over 10 villagers were injured or dead.

Police detained 20 protesters, the site was blocked

and news was sealed off.

Zou Wei (Human Rights Activist, Hangzhou):

“This reflects authorities』 rigid way of thinking.

They don』t investigate the cause of the environmental

pollution and don』t investigate who is responsible.

Instead, they maintain “stability” and detain villagers.

The so-called stability is the leading cause of instability.

This is the ignorant “maintaining stability” thinking

of the Chinese authorities.”

Haining local government announced on September 17

that the Solar company had halted production.

Vice Director of Haining Environmental Protection Bureau,

Chen Hongming admitted that Zhejiang Jinko factory

had failed its pollution tests since April. However, authorities

had not started any investigations until protests erupted.

Other sources say that Jinko Solar company

pays $31 million in tax each year.

Zan Aizong (Former Director, China Ocean News):

“The Solar company is so arrogant,

it must have the local government behind it,

otherwise they wouldn』t dare beat Zhejiang TV journalists.

The Chinese authorities are corrupt, the enterprises

give them benefits. Those companies causing major pollution

are a huge tax payers,

they are protected and they won』t be punished.”

Ningbo lawyer Mei Chunlai posted an article on his blog

saying that the government is no longer serving the people,

instead serving the biggest enterprises, seeking only profit.

Making money is their first goal, therefore, any other

demands against their interests naturally have to give way.

Hangzhou human rights activist, Zou Wei pointed out

that Chinese economic development was established

on the expense of destructive environment exploitation.

Lawyer Mei Chunlai questioned how the Haining unrest

reflected China』s economic development,

“What is most important, civilian survival

or authority interests?

Civilian survival has been pushed to the edge of the cliff

by the CCP』s government.
