Same Protest Different Results: the Chinese Communist Party is in Command of Guns

A dramatic change took place in Egypt.

Mubarak』s sudden resign left the power temporarily

to the armed forces. During the process,

Egyptian armed forces played an important role.

Compared to the student movement 22 years ago

in China』s Tiananmen Square, the military forces

in the two countries brought different results.

After Mubarak』s resignation, the Egyptian Supreme

Council of the armed forces said in Feb 12』s statement

to seek peaceful transition.

The current cabinet will last till the new government

is elected.

Some shops in Cairo have reopened.

Many people went back to work.

To restore order becomes the first priority.

Still, some protesters are reluctant to leave

Cairo's Tahrir Square

On Feb.13, dozens of protesters refused to leave and

demanded the military to immediately carry out

democratic reform.

The soldiers decided to let them stay.

Because the armed forces were restrained,

Egyptians welcome them to take over the country

temporarily. Wael Ghonim, Google's Middle East and

North Africa Head Of Marketing said on Twitter,

“The Council』s statement is good.

I trust the Egyptian armed forces.”

When the world is expecting Egypt to embark on

the road of democracy, Ma Zhaoxu, spokesman

of China』s Foreign Ministry, in response to

the new situation in Egypt, said on Feb. 12, that

China hopes to see Egypt restore stability.

Does he mean the same “stability” as 22 years ago

when former CCP leader Deng Xiaoping said,

“Killing 200,000 people will guarantee 20 years of

stability?” Deng gave orders to shoot the protesters

so as to maintain the Communist power.

Gao Yu: “Both are totalitarian regimes.

But they are different. The Communist Party is

different from Mubarak』s Party.”

Apple Daily in Hong Kong said, Zhang Shijun, 41,

was a propaganda officer in the troops to impose

martial law in Beijing who witnessed

the Tiananmen Massacre.

He was discharged from the army

for sympathizing with the students.

Zhang Shijun said, “Chinese troops should be

ashamed in front of Egyptian military forces. ”

“the armed forces should not shoot the people.”

He believes the military should be given to the state

and maintain neutral in politics.”

Gao Yu: “the Chinese Communist Party is giving

command to troops. In other countries, however,

many military officers graduated from West Point.

They took oath not to shoot the people,

but to support them. That』s the major difference.”

Will the Egyptian protest spread to China?

The Chinese official media continue to down play

the Egyptian protest and Mubarak』s resignation,

describing it as “riots” and “chaos,”

ignoring the season』s for people』s discontent.

Chinese newspapers and Websites carry little about

global reactions to the new development in Egypt.

Deutsche Welle cited comments on

Süddeutsche Zeitung, from the regime』s censorship

of Chinese media and Internet, one can tell that

the Communist leaders attempt to terminate

any protests in their budding stage.

It shows how insecure they are.

The comment said, no one has ever forecast the social

movements in the Middle East now or in Beijing

in 1989. No one can rule out the possibility

that it might spread far east, thousands of miles away

from the pyramid.

On Feb 12, exile ex-student leader Wang Dan said

on Twitter, “Youth in China, isn』t it time for you to

do something for your country?

We failed the first time. But it doesn』t mean

we can』t succeed the second time, or the third time.”
