US Ambassador visits human rights lawyer Ni Yulan
U.S. ambassador to China Jon Huntsman recently visited Ni Yulan, and learned about her living conditions. Huntsman inquired about the persecution Ni experienced over the years, and encouraged her to persevere. Ni released her photo with Huntsman online, which drew a heated public attention.
According to Oriental Daily, on Feb. 11, U.S. ambassador to China, Huntsman, visited human rights lawyer Ni Yulan at her temporary residence in Beijing Yuxingong Hotel.
Huntsman expressed his concern for Ni』s conditions, as he learned that water and electricity were cut in her room.
Ni Yulan: “He came to learn my sufferings over the past 10 years: how I was oppressed, tortured, abducted, and sentenced.”
As a human rights lawyer, Ni was handicapped in the torture and sentenced. She was released from prison to find her house demolished by Beijing Public Security Bureau, who under public pressure gave her temporary accommodation in Yuxingong Hotel for free. During her stay, Ni was often harassed by the police. Water and electricity in her room have been cut off since Dec. 20, 2010.
Ni says, the police instructed the hotel staff not to let her get hot water, and to post bills on her door everyday, urging her to pay. The phone line in her room was cut, and the police installed 2 cameras in her room.
NI Yulan: “They sawed the water pipe and cut it out. So there is no water in the room. With no water or electricity, it』s only 16 degrees Celsius in the room.
It is cold here and the room gets no sunshine.”
Despite the oppression and harassment, Ni continued to provide legal help to petitioners. She also fended off the police many times from searching her room.
Ni: “I think the police want to come in and get this computer. I need it to help petitioners prepare their documents. The room is filled with their documents.”
Ni told reporters, her conversation with the U.S.Ambassador was delightful. Huntsman praised her for her strength and courage to fight the evil,
and encouraged her to persevere.
Ni』s photo with the Ambassador attracted much attention online. Internet users commented, Ni was persecuted for protecting the rights of demolition victims; the U.S. government was verbally attacked by the Chinese regime for criticizing
its human rights policies. Such a common ground has brought the two together.
Ni』s living conditions received international attention. According to her usband, Ni has already received visits from officers of the EU, Germany, Canada,
France, Sweden, the UK, Czech Republic,
and Switzerland.
