Netizen's Support for Wukan Was Suppressed

Wukan village of Lufeng City, Guangdong Province

has been besieged by the Chinese authorities for days.

With water and electricity cut off, the villagers are in a

more and more difficult situation.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has been

sending a large number of police to surround Wukan, causing concern for Wukan's future.

Some people in China have launched activities to

support Wukan, but were only arrested.

On the afternoon of Dec 18, following an agreement

made via the internet dozens of netizens from Guangzhou

went to Guangzhou Zhengjia Plaza,

where a food festival is being held.

They planned to give speeches and hold banners to

the public at 3:30pm, to show support to Wukan villagers

who are fighting to get their farm land back.

But before they started the activity, netizen Yu Gang,

Yang Chong, Liu Hui and others were forcefully taken away by the police.

Participant Yang Chong says: “At the beginning

they said they would take us away.

We struggled a little and they hesitated.

About one minute later, we argued a little.

Seeing no other people were getting involved,

they took us away without fearing interference.”

According to Yang Chong's description, about a dozen

of them were first taken to the Zhengjia Plaza basement.

Two hours later, they were taken to the Jianghe Public

Security Bureau and later transferred to the police station of each one's district.

Yang Chong's statement was recorded once again.

The police also took the key to his house.

Netizen Mr. Yin told the reporter, some netizens held

a similar event in Shenzhen around the same time,

and hundreds of people witnessed the event,

which lasted about 10 minutes. The netizens came back safely.

The Associated Press HK reporter videotaped the event.

Mr. Yin expressed that Wukan's protest is very important

to the Chinese people.

Mr. Yin: "I very much hope Wukan people carry on,

and that a larger outbreak will happen to protest the issue of corruption.

There are many villages in China like Wukan,

where villagers' interests were taken by the authorities.

But those villagers did not step up.

I hope they will be like the Wukan villagers."

On Dec 18, the authorities doubled the number of

public security, military police and special police forces around Wukan.

The situation at Wukan has intensified.

U.S. China Aid leader Fu Xiqiu said: “(In 1989) before

June 3, at least there was no public use of military force.

Now, military forces have been stationed and are ready.

Therefore support and attention from the outside world is extremely important.”

Federation for a Democratic China Vice Chairman

Sheng Xue told NTD,

Wukan villagers organized an interim Representative

Committee and Women's Association, etc.

It is already at an early stage of democracy.

They have a clear democratic demand, their protest

has lasted for a while, and the situation has intensified.

Sheng Xue: “Anyone who cares about democracy and basic

human rights in China should pay close attention to Wukan.

One reason is that it is very possible that it will be an

opportunity to start a basic level democratic revolution.

Another reason is that it is a sensitive issue for the CCP to

express their attitude toward this incident.”

Sheng Xue emphasized that the outside world needs

to have a high focus on Wukan, to avoid it developing into a tragedy.

Voice of America reported, on the evening of Dec 18,

lawyer Tang Jingling who pays close attention to Wukan

was taken away from his home by the China's

National Security police.
