Story

Russian police detained 15 protesters who gathered in freezing temperatures in central Moscow on Tuesday (January 31), according to Russian media which cited police sources.

Police ringed Moscow's Triumphalnaya Square, the traditional site of the '31st' protests in the Russian capital, as about 70 protesters gathered on the sidewalk, with some of them tossing leaflets and chanting anti-government slogans.

Rights activists and Kremlin opponents have been staging demonstrations on the last day of each month with 31 days, in a symbolic reference to the right to free assembly guaranteed in Article 31 of Russia's constitution.

One of the protesters, Irina Kalmykova, said she was there to demonstrate for her constitutional right to free assembly.

"I want to express my views on civil rights, as the power structures have deteriorated so that they don't feel the people any more," she said.

The arrests at Triumphalnaya were in sharp contrast to the Kremlin's recent softer tone towards Russian opposition supporters who have staged protests since a disputed Dec. 4 State Duma poll brought thousands to the streets to demand new elections and an end to Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's rule.
